2011 Under Armor Grind Session
By Ian Powers

Under Armour recently held its first annual Grind Session in suburban Chicago at the Lake Barrington Field House. 50 of the nation's top players attended and took part in a series of combine style testing, drills, and games. Due to campus visits, nursing summer injuries, high school team fall leagues, many of the premier players were not able to attend. The camp did however feature some quality prospects who may someday be college and NBA stars. Coaches from IMG Academy conducted the combine portion of the event. Trainers Jay Hernandez and Hanif Hill led the skill portion of the event. Hernandez currently trains Kemba Walker and Hill trains Kevin Durant, Monta Ellis, and Gilbert Arenas to name a few. Having personally witnessed the training regiment of Hill, I knew the kids would receive top-notch instruction over the course of the two-day period. Here are some of the prospects that stood out.

King McClure 6'2" 195, SG/SF, Ovilla, TX, Triple A Academy 2015 - Only a freshman, McClure did not appear intimated by his older peers. He has a strong and powerful body that he knows how to use. He can get to the basket and can shoot the ball out to three. He can handle and get his team into their offense and creates plays for others when things break down. He needs to improve the consistency on his shot and while he has good bounce at this stage, as he matures he will need to add more explosiveness through strength and condition training. He wears a size 16 shoe and has very big hands that suggest he will grow a considerable amount. He has a lot of upside and is one of the more impressive 2015 prospects I have seen.

Under Armour Grind Session recap
CHICAGO -- The Under Armour Grind Session was held at Lake Barrington Fieldhouse where some of the top high school talents in the country were provided an opportunity to hone their skills in a number of intense basketball specific training sessions and organized scrimmages. The No. 2 pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, Derrick Williams, was there to assist in drills and to share some life experiences on and off the court with the camp.

Standout players
King McClure (Ovilla, Texas/Triple A Academy)
2015, SF/SG, 6-2, 193 pounds
The strong and physical young wing has a great body and uses it to get to the rim and score through contact on the break or from the wing in the half-court set. He rebounds well and plays with energy and urgency on both ends of the floor. He also hit some open midrange jumpers, but must work to extend his range to the arc and make it a consistent weapon. Overall, McClure has all the signs of being a big-time player and his upside is tremendous.

Earlier this month CourtCred.com attended the Fab Frosh Camp in Suwanee, Ga. While most spectators were wowed by Mickey Mitchell, it was another Texas kid who came in the gym a little late because of flight delays that put on a show. His name is King McClure and he runs with an AAU program called the Triple A Stallions which is associated with the Triple A Academy that his father Leroy McClure is the principal at. McClure is a big body combo guard who is a big-time playmaker. As he enters his freshman year of high school this fall, expect to hear more about him on the national map.

“McClure wasted no time in making an impact. At 6'2, McClure is the strongest and most explosive guard at the camp...Not only is he powerful, but he has the ball handling skills to match his speed and quickness. On the defensive end he is a bulldog of a defender, often being matched up with bigger opponents and coming out victorious by using text book block outs to keep them off the boards.”

“Another notable player from the Longhorn state was King McClure. The 6-foot-2 combo guard was a problem the entire weekend for those interested in guarding him. He used power and speed to get to the basket with a purpose….McClure is a pitbull defensively who does not make it easy for anyone to get to the basket.”

“McClure is another scorer who has a very strong body and is more physically mature than most guards in his age group. He is very good at finishing through contact in the lane and could be considered a combo down the line because of his size and skill. He has range to 20 feet and is a good creator off the dribble.”

King McClure - EHS Alumni Nets Fab Frosh All-Star MVP
The Fab Frosh Camp, hosted by Clay Dade, was the proving ground for some of the top rising freshman in the country this weekend at the Suwanee Sports Academy. You hear the names but seeing their games brings to light the marathon for who will be the top players in the class of 2015.

“6-foot-3 PG King McClure – The strong bodied guard dominated the All-Star game. The EliteHoopsShowcase Alumni has a body of a H.S. senior with game to match. He can score from deep, mid-range and get to the basket for contact finishes. His game doesn't end on the offense end, he is a willing defender. His All-Star game MVP was well earned. Baylor and Houston have started the offer list.”
